As the Mongol Rally is an adventure it is entirely up to you to select the route which will take you to the finish line.

In the past people have come up with a lot of options some involving travelling through up to 8 countries!

The most common routes were:

Northern - this route will take you through Europe, then into Ukraine, Russia, down into Mongolia and back into Russia to the finish line in Ulan Ude.

Central - it used to go through Europe, then into Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, back into Russia and then down into Mongolia and back into Russia to the finish line in Ulan Ude. Taking this route means entering Russia 3 times. The maximum number of times you can enter Russia on a tourist visa is 2. So you've got a couple of options:

1. Travel through Europe, then into Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, back into Russia, down into Mongolia and back into Russia to the finish line in Ulan Ude. That will mean getting 2 visas for Russia. the first one will be a double entry one and the second one will need to be either a transit visa. You can apply for this visa at the embassy of Russia in Ulan Baatar. The only catch is - once the visa is issued, you have to wait for 3 days until you can enter Russia.

2. Amend the route to the following: through Europe, Turkey, then into Azerbaijan, get a ferry to Kazakhstan, then into Russia, down into Mongolia and back into Russia to the finish line in Ulan Ude. This route will require more visas but will let you avoid entering Russia thrice.

And then finally the Southern route (Southern via Iran or Southern via Azerbaijan) - which will take you through Europe, Turkey, then into Azerbaijan or Iran, get into Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, then into Russia, down into Mongolia and back into Russia to the finish line in Ulan Ude. You can also travel through Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan before you get to Kazakhstan.

The list is endless really and as a part of an adventure you are the one responsible for selecting the countries you are travelling to. All you need to do to find out your options is go the website dedicated to the Rally mongolrally.thevisamachine.com and select the countries you are planning to travel through on our interactive map. You'll then be able to see not only which visas you need, but also how long they take to get, how much they cost (whether you apply for them through us or directly with the embassy), which documents are required and which options you have.
